The Perhentian Islands & Diving
Perhentian (pronounced Perhen-TEE-AHN, not
Perhen-SHEN) means "place to stop" in Malay, and the islands got their
name as a staging point used by traders traveling from Malaysia to
Bangkok.
The two main islands are Perhentian Besar ("Big Perhentian") and
Perhentian Kecil ("Small Perhentian"). Kecil attracts more
travelers as it has cheaper accommodation, while Besar is a little
more expensive and caters more to families and those who want to avoid
the backpacker party scene.
The small, uninhabited islands of Susu Dara, Seringgi and Rawa lie off Kecil. All the islands belong to a protected marine park, which means that fishing, collecting coral and littering are strictly prohibited. It also makes for great SCUBA diving.
All manner of aquatic life is visible both near and far from the beach such as turtles, sharks, coral and thousands of tropical fish. The interior of the island is covered by jungle with a wide variety of species. You can watch monitor lizards, monkeys, geckos, flying squirrels, butterflies and many other types - sometimes right in front of your bungalow. There are no roads found on the island, the means of transportation is still like it was hundred of years ago - by the sea. As such, Perhentian Island remains pristine and relatively untouched. A true tropical island paradise - Perfect for diving.
Your Diving courses will be right off the beach - right in front of your resort! The costs of living are low, the diving is great and the Perhentian Islands are a great place to spend a few weeks.
For fun diving - The Perhentians make for a good week or two of chilling out and hanging out in hammocks with a couple of days every day.
